Long Island Teen Trio Nabbed In Stolen Vehicle, Police Say

Three Long Island teens were arrested after a man noticed them allegedly driving his stolen vehicle.

The incident took place around 11:10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, on the Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, said the Nassau County Police.

According to detectives, a 37-year-old man was driving eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike near the intersection of Stone Street when he noticed a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe pulling into a Sunoco gas station. 

The man believed the vehicle was the same one that he had previously reported stolen. The victim pulled into the gas station and confronted the driver of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle and two other occupants fled on foot southbound onto Stone Avenue, police said.

Fifth Precinct officers arrived on the scene and after a thorough investigation with the assistance of Nassau County Police Department Canine and Aviation units, officers were able to locate the three suspects in the rear yard of a house on Jacob Street. All three defendants were taken into Police custody without incident.

Arrested included Joshua Mayes, age 19, of Freeport, Mia Escobar, age 18, of Valley Stream, and a juvenile.

Mayes was charged with:

  • Grand larceny
  • Criminal possession of stolen property
  • Criminal trespass
  • Unauthorized use of a vehicle
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana

Escobar and a 16-year-old female juvenile were charged with:

  • Grand larceny
  • Criminal possession of stolen property
  • Criminal trespass
  • Unauthorized use of a vehicles
